Our Local Community Hub for Florence, KY

At Tom Gill Chevrolet, we’ve called Florence home since 1996, and this town has given us far more than customers. It’s given us neighbors. Florence sits in Boone County, part of the Greater Cincinnati area, and it’s the second-most populous city in Northern Kentucky at roughly 34,000 people, growing a little over 1% a year. It’s also the largest city in Kentucky that isn’t a county seat, which tells you something about how it grew: not as an administrative center, but as a crossroads people kept choosing.
Consider this our local community hub for Florence, KY: a place to learn about the parks, restaurants, schools, and organizations that make this city worth putting down roots in. If you’re new to town or just looking for something to do this weekend, we hope this guide helps. And if you ever want to talk vehicles while you’re here, feel free to reach out to our team.
Parks and Recreation: Exploring Stringtown Park and Beyond
Florence maintains a park system built for a growing city: six developed parks, two undeveloped parks, the Florence Family Aquatic Center, the Florence/Boone County Skate Park, and World of Golf, spread across roughly 169 acres. Whether you want a quiet walk or an afternoon of ball games, the city has laid out a lot of ground to enjoy.
Stringtown Park Amenities and Facilities
Stringtown Park sits on KY Route 18, also known as Burlington Pike, between Kathryn and Wallace Avenues. The city bought this eight-acre property back in 2001 from the Isabella Schmidt estate, and it’s become one of the more charming green spaces in Florence. Kids gravitate toward the Camelot-themed playground, a design that stands out from typical park equipment. The park stays open daily from sunrise until sunset, and if you’re planning a gathering, shelter reservations go through Community Services Admin at (859) 647-5441. The picnic area includes six tables, a grill, and a water fountain, all set within a layout that’s easy to find your way around.
Trails, Recreation Centers, and Outdoor Fun
Beyond Stringtown, an asphalt-paved trail funded by a Recreational Trails Grant winds through the park, and a sand volleyball court gives visitors something more active to do. Florence Nature Park has approximately 15 acres of paved walking trails, acquired back in 1986, and features the Evelyn M. Kalb Gathering House, also known as the Nature Park Event Center, which you can rent daily between 8 a.m. and midnight. Lincoln Woods Park brings two enclosed asphalt tennis courts, a color-coated basketball court, a concrete masonry picnic shelter with tables, grills, and a drinking fountain, plus two clay infield ball fields.
For something bigger, England Idlewild Park covers 290 acres just outside city limits. It has three stocked fishing ponds, baseball fields, basketball courts, paved walking trails with fitness stations, unpaved mountain bike trails, and a dog park. Disc golf players know it well too, since it hosts one of the nation’s top courses with 24 championship holes, alongside a bike park featuring two pump tracks, a dual slalom course, and three jump lines. World of Golf has been operating for more than 48 years and offers a full 18-hole executive course, 18 holes of minigolf, nine holes of footgolf, a driving range, a golf simulator, an indoor range, and instruction from pro golfers.
Local Events and Seasonal Traditions in Florence
Florence keeps a full calendar, and we always encourage folks to check the current schedule since dates shift year to year.
Annual Festivals and Neighborhood Celebrations
The St. Paul Parish Summer Festival draws hundreds of volunteers each year, with food stands, carnival games, and live music benefiting local charities. Each July, the Kenton County Fair takes place nearby at the Kenton County Fairgrounds in Independence, giving families a classic fair experience close to home.
Year-Round Community Activities
The Florence Y’alls, Northern Kentucky’s professional baseball team and part of the independent Frontier League with an MLB partnership, play throughout the season at Florence Y’alls Ballpark. Their promotions, like $2 Tuesdays, Firework Fridays, and Rockin’ Saturdays, give families a reason to head out for the evening without much planning.
Turfway Park Racing & Gaming also stays busy year-round with its race and sports book, gaming machines, live and simulcast racing, two restaurants, weekend live music, and an event center that hosts concerts. The Boone County Public Library’s Florence Branch runs community programs throughout the year as well, worth checking into if you’re looking for something educational or family-friendly.
Where to Eat and Shop in Florence
Florence has built a food and retail scene that fits a growing, diverse population, and we’re always happy to point neighbors toward local favorites.
Local Restaurants Worth Visiting
Manny’s Cabin on Dixie Highway is the one we send people to first. It’s a small family-run Venezuelan spot where the owners walk you through the menu and bring sauce samples, and the arepa pabellón has pulled people off the interstate on purpose. Open Wednesday through Sunday, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and the dining room is small enough that it fills fast.
Ford’s Garage on Houston Road does something different: a full restaurant built around a vintage Ford service bay, right down to the mechanic uniforms and the bathrooms people keep posting about. The burgers earn the crowd it draws.
For a neighborhood bar and grill, Blind Squirrel on US-42 has a patio with lawn games, live music on weekends, and burgers locals rate above the chains. Buffalo Bob’s on Berberich is the older, cheaper, busier option, family-run and known for wings and cheese curds.
There’s plenty more across town, and our guide to the best restaurants in Florence has the fuller list.
Shopping Spots and Local Businesses
Florence Mall anchors the city’s shopping scene with 76 retailers covering fashion, tech, dining, and entertainment. It was built in 1976 and originally anchored by Sears, Shillito’s, Pogue’s, and JCPenney, so it carries some real history alongside its current lineup. The Florence Y’all Water Tower, located on mall property, has become a landmark recognizable to anyone who’s driven through town.
Beyond the mall, Main Street and the surrounding area mix big-box retail with family-owned shops, chain and casual dining, bakeries, and specialty food shops. For a fuller picture, check out our Florence shopping guide.
If you’d like to swing by our showroom while you’re out running errands, we’re always happy to reach out to our team with any questions about new vehicles or service.
Family Activities, Schools, and Local Attractions
Families in Florence have no shortage of things to do together. DEFY Florence offers active indoor fun, while Big Bone Lick State Historic Site lets visitors see bison up close, something you don’t get to do just anywhere so near a city. Boone County Distilling Co. offers tours and tastings for the adults in the group, and Rabbit Hash General Store, operating continuously since 1831, sells groceries and old-fashioned candy alongside items from Gunpowder Creek Vineyards. It also houses an art gallery and offers overnight stays at The Old Hashienda for anyone wanting to make a weekend of it.
On the education side, Boone County Schools is the third-largest district in Kentucky by enrollment, serving Florence along with Burlington, Union, and Hebron. Florence families feed into Boone County High School, which enrolls roughly 1,300 students, and into a set of elementary and middle schools that vary by neighborhood rather than by city line. That last part catches people off guard when they’re house-hunting: two homes a few streets apart in Florence can feed into different elementaries, so it’s worth checking the district’s school locator against a specific address before you commit.
Private options in the area include several parochial schools tied to local parishes, and Northern Kentucky University sits about fifteen minutes east in Highland Heights for anyone thinking further ahead.
Community Organizations and Volunteer Opportunities
Florence runs on the people who show up for their neighbors, and there are plenty of ways to get involved no matter your schedule or interests.
Non-Profits Serving Florence Residents
The Boone County Senior Center and the Skees Senior Activity Center, both operated by the R.C. Durr YMCA, serve adults 60 and older with fitness classes, card games like Euchre and Bunco, Bingo nights, and health screenings. St. Vincent de Paul NKY welcomes volunteer groups of up to 10 people at its Cold Spring, Erlanger, and Florence locations, so families, coworkers, or groups of friends can pitch in together without much hassle.
Ways to Get Involved and Give Back
If you’re interested in volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul NKY, reaching out directly to coordinate a group visit is the best first step. The Boone County Public Library also maintains a Boone County Resources page listing local help directories, a useful starting point if you’re looking to connect with an organization that matches your interests. We think of these efforts as part of what makes our Florence community page worth returning to, since the people doing this work deserve visibility.
Helpful City Resources for Residents and Newcomers
The Northern Kentucky Area Development District, located at 22 Spiral Drive in Florence, KY, is a regional resource for residents sorting through local services. The city’s own site frames Florence as a hub for practical needs, whether that’s paying bills, learning about starting a business, or finding out what’s happening around town for the weekend. It’s a good bookmark for anyone new to the area or anyone who just wants to stay current on city meetings and local projects.
